Biography

Dr. Peter Hirth is a Venture Partner at Wellington Partners, an advisory rather than full-time investing role. He holds a PhD in molecular genetics from Heidelberg University, was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of California, San Diego and a research scientist at the Max Planck Institute, and was Vice President of Research at Boehringer Mannheim. He co-founded Sugen in 1991 and was its President until 2000; the company listed on Nasdaq in 1994 and was acquired by Pharmacia and then Pfizer in 1999. He co-founded Plexxikon in 2001 and was its CEO until 2013; it was acquired by Daiichi Sankyo in 2011. Over more than 30 years in biotechnology he helped advance FDA-approved therapeutics including Zelboraf and Sutent. He joined Wellington Partners in 2022 and chairs IO Biotech while serving on the boards of Iconic Therapeutics, Escient Pharmaceuticals, Vaxcyte, Trex Bio and Aligos Therapeutics.
