He holds a doctorate in medicine from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, with training in internal medicine and oncology, and was an assistant professor there. He spent 13 years at BASF Pharma Knoll AG, including as Global Head of Clinical Development and Head of R&D USA. He joined the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development as Director of R&D in 2003 and has been its President and CEO since 2009, and he co-chairs the Working Group on New Drugs of the WHO Stop TB Partnership and sits on the governing board of GlaxoSmithKline's Tres Cantos Open Lab. He has served on the boards of several biotech companies including The Medicines Company, acquired by Novartis. He joined Wellington Partners in 2005 and advises on clinical development, regulatory affairs and strategic decisions.
