He graduated with B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Malaya in 1986, was appointed a Junior Fellow of the International Center of Theoretical Physics in Trieste in 1985, and received his Ph.D. in Computational and Theoretical Physics from Georgia Tech in 1991, followed by post-doctoral training at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge from 1991 to 1996. He was an Assistant Director of Research at the Cavendish from 1996 to 2000 and a Fellow of Jesus College Cambridge over the same period, then founding Executive Director of the Bioinformatics Institute in Singapore from 2000 to 2007, then head of the Bioinformatics and Systems Biology programme at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey from 2007 to 2012, and finally ten years at Johnson & Johnson, retiring as Scientific Fellow and Global Head of Computational Sciences.
