Upfront Ventures was founded in 1996 as GRP Partners in Century City, Los Angeles, by Yves Sisteron, Steven Dietz, and Steve Lebow, initially raising a $200 million fund focused on traditional retail investments including Costco, Starbucks, and Office Depot before pivoting toward technology. Mark Suster, who'd already founded and sold two enterprise software companies (including Koral, acquired by Salesforce), joined in 2007 to build a dedicated internet investment arm, becoming Managing Partner in 2011 and helping lead the firm's 2013 rebrand to Upfront Ventures - a name chosen to reflect transparency with founders and a nod to the entertainment industry's 'upfronts.' That retail-to-tech pivot, combined with genuine roots in Los Angeles rather than a Silicon Valley satellite office, made Upfront the largest and most established venture capital firm in LA, deliberately deploying 40-45% of its capital in Southern California and building the Upfront Summit into the region's flagship tech conference. The firm now manages $1.9 billion and has backed more than 200 companies including TrueCar, Ring, Maker Studios, and Overture.
