Root Ventures

Root Ventures was founded in 2013 by Avidan Ross, whose genuinely unusual path - embedded systems engineering, CTO of a $15 billion investment firm, then literally designing industrial robotics for the Food Network's kitchens - shaped a seed fund explicitly built by engineers for engineers. Root specializes in startups where significant technical depth is required to launch, spanning robotics, aerospace, agricultural technology, sensors, and IoT, deliberately favoring system-level innovation that requires specialized knowledge most generalist investors can't properly evaluate. Ross positions the firm less as a financial backer and more as an engineering sherpa, helping founders debug hardware roadmaps and manufacturing decisions directly, and closed Root's third fund at $150 million in 2022.
