Future Ventures

Future Ventures backs founder led, mission driven companies at the seed and early stage, hunting for what its co-founders call new industry formation, ideas so unconventional or so long dated that they face little competition from other investors. The firm deliberately keeps its funds small, closing successive vehicles of about $200 million in 2019, 2021, and 2023, and writes first checks of roughly $3 million to $6 million, usually leading the founding round and taking a board seat. Its range spans commercial space, nuclear fusion, quantum computing, robotics, AI, synthetic biology, sustainable agriculture, and clean energy, with portfolio companies including SpaceX, Commonwealth Fusion Systems, Neuralink, xAI, Upside Foods, and MosaicML, which Databricks acquired in 2023. Co-founders Steve Jurvetson and Maryanna Saenko draw on earlier investments such as Tesla, Planet Labs, D-Wave, Hotmail, and Skype, which the firm cites as $1.7 trillion of aggregate value creation, to argue that the biggest venture outcomes come from technologies that create entire sectors rather than compete inside existing ones.
