Flagship Pioneering

Flagship Pioneering was founded in 2000 by Noubar Afeyan on a model most venture firms don't attempt: rather than only investing in outside startups, Flagship invents companies from scratch internally, pairing entrepreneurially-minded scientists with a structured 'What if?' process that iterates toward genuinely first-in-category bioplatform companies. That approach has produced more than 100 scientific ventures worth over $100 billion in aggregate value, thousands of patents, and more than 50 drugs in clinical development. Its best-known creation is Moderna, which Afeyan co-founded in 2010 and took public on the Nasdaq in December 2018 - years before its mRNA platform became central to the global COVID-19 vaccine response.
