Smith is the founder and Managing Partner of Digitalis Ventures and the broader Digitalis Group, which spans the venture funds, the nonprofit Digitalis Commons, and the applied research group Digitalis Labs. He founded the New York firm in 2016 around a thesis of applying an engineering mindset to unmet needs in biomedicine and health, and has led it through a 100 million dollar debut fund, a 300 million dollar fourth fund, and two dedicated Companion Funds for animal health raised with Mars. Before Digitalis he was founding director of the Mount Sinai Institute of Technology and a professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He is a trustee of The Jackson Laboratory. He holds a BA from Williams College and a JD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
