Biography

Zhang Zhen worked as an investment professional at IDG Capital, one of China's most established venture firms, alongside future co-founders Gao Xiang and Yue Bin, before the three left together in January 2014 to found their own firm, initially named Banyan Capital and later rebranded to Gaorong Capital (Gaorong Ventures). That shared IDG pedigree gave the trio a genuine head start on sourcing and evaluating Chinese technology deals, and Gaorong has since built a strong track record in consumer internet, enterprise software, and healthcare, backing companies including Pinduoduo and Kuaishou through to public listings. The firm now manages approximately $4 billion, reflecting the broader wave of spinout funds founded by veteran investors from China's earliest generation of institutional VCs.
