Frank Bonsal co-founded New Enterprise Associates in 1977 with Dick Kramlich and Chuck Newhall, bringing the East Coast side of the new bicoastal firm. Before NEA he was a general partner at Alex. Brown & Sons in Baltimore, where he worked on initial public offerings for startup companies after an earlier role at Robert Garrett & Sons. At NEA he concentrated on life sciences investments and held board seats at companies including Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Biopure and Aspect Medical Systems. He retired from NEA in 2003 and afterwards served as a director of Red Abbey Venture Partners.
