Biography

Charlie Hipwood is President and CEO of MassVentures and is quoted in that role in the organisation's own releases, including the 16 May 2025 and 13 August 2026 START grant announcements, the 9 January 2025 Mass Academic Spinouts Center launch and the 21 November 2025 board appointment release. In the May 2025 economic impact release he stated that with $8.5 million in state taxpayer money invested since 1978 MassVentures has supported 186 companies with investment and funded its own operations for 46 years, and in the January 2025 release he stated that academic spinouts represent over 80 percent of the current portfolio. A profile page on the Mass Innovation Nights site lists prior roles at JP Morgan, Level 3 Communications and STAG Capital, and states that he founded the technology start-ups Fluent Fintech and AI Exchange; that page is third-party and self-descriptive, and no first-party MassVentures biography was found to corroborate it. A Gesmer Updegrove article published 13 July 2023 refers to him having taken the role roughly three years before publication, which is too imprecise to record as a join year.
