Shenzhen Capital Group describes itself on its own site as a state-owned comprehensive investment group whose core business is venture capital, and says its business spans venture capital, real estate investment, public mutual funds and asset securitisation. Within venture capital it says it manages venture funds, funds of funds, S funds and buyout funds, and it has managed government guidance funds since setting up China's first government guidance sub-fund with the Suzhou municipal government in 2007 and taking on entrusted management of the Shenzhen municipal guidance fund from 2016. Chairman Zuo Ding stated in a 25 February 2026 article on the group's site that more than 85 per cent of the 1,800 plus companies the group has directly invested in are start-up stage or growth stage, that more than 90 per cent are hard technology companies, and that the focus areas cover semiconductors, robotics, new materials, biopharmaceuticals and industrial software. The group's investment departments are organised by both sector (information technology, high-end equipment, general equipment, new materials, new energy, biopharmaceuticals) and region (Greater Bay Area, North China, Northeast, Central China, Southeast, Jiangsu, Shanghai, West China). Its wholly owned subsidiary Red Soil Innovation Fund Management, set up in June 2014, was the first public mutual fund management company in China established by a private equity institution.

Shenzhen Innovation Technology Investment Co., Ltd. (深圳市创新科技投资有限公司) is formally established on 25 August 1999, shortly before the first China Hi-Tech Fair; the group's 2025 credit rating report states it was formed in August 1999 with cash contributions from Shenzhen Investment Management Corporation acting for the Shenzhen municipal government together with seven entities including Shenzhen Expressway Development Corporation.

The company is renamed Shenzhen Capital Group (深圳市创新投资集团), per the group's own 发展历程 timeline.
2007
The group sets up China's first government guidance sub-fund, the Suzhou Guofa fund (苏州国发基金), in cooperation with the Suzhou municipal government.
2014
Red Soil Innovation Fund Management (红土创新基金管理公司) is established on 18 June 2014 as a wholly owned subsidiary, the first public mutual fund management company in China approved by the CSRC to be founded by a private equity institution.
2016
The group takes on entrusted management of the Shenzhen municipal guidance fund.
2017
Sinovatio (中新赛克, Shenzhen Stock Exchange 002912), in which the group invested in 2012, lists on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.
2020
Shenzhen Capital Red Soil Asset Management (深创投红土资产管理) is established on 7 September 2020 for infrastructure asset-backed securities; on 25 November 2020 the group's registered capital is increased from capital reserves to RMB 10.0 billion (100.00亿元).
2024
At a board meeting on 29 January 2024 Zuo Ding is elected chairman and Liu Suhua is appointed general manager; Ni Zewang (倪泽望) retires as chairman at the statutory age. The group also becomes entrusted manager of the National Social Security Fund's Greater Bay Area science and technology innovation special fund and is named to the SASAC 双百企业 list.
2025
In December 2025 the group brings the national venture capital guidance fund's Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area fund, with a total size of RMB 50.45 billion (504.5亿元), to Shenzhen, according to chairman Zuo Ding.
2026
Liu Suhua ceases to be a director and general manager of the group on transfer, taking up the roles of deputy party secretary, director and general manager at Shenzhen Investment Holdings (深投控) as reported on 1 July 2026.

ROKAE Robotics (珞石机器人, 03752.HK) lists on the main board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 9 July 2026, which the group's own announcement describes as the 300th listed company among its direct investments.
