Oxford Science Enterprises was founded in 2015 by David Norwood, the founder of IP Group who had already built one major university-spinout investment platform, in partnership with the University of Oxford, giving OSE preferred access to deal flow from one of the world's leading research institutions. Unlike a traditional venture fund with fixed timelines, OSE operates as a genuinely evergreen holding company, taking long-term stakes in deep tech, biotech, and advanced materials spinouts with patience over quick exits - a structural choice that led to real leadership turnover in its early years before stabilizing in September 2023 with the appointment of Ed Bussey as CEO and Jack Edmondson as the newly created CIO. Bussey, a three-time successful founder, now leads OSE's mission to commercialize Oxford's world-leading research, having deployed more than £2 billion in total capital since launch across more than 125 spinout companies with a combined value exceeding £1.1 billion.
No confirmed exit yet - OSE operates a deliberately patient, evergreen model with no fixed fund life, and its 125-plus Oxford spinout companies remain privately held with a combined value exceeding £1.1 billion
