Chase Coleman was only 25 when Julian Robertson closed Tiger Management in 2000 and handed him roughly $25 million to manage - one of the original 'Tiger Cubs' who launched their own funds from Tiger's wind-down. A childhood friend of Robertson's son, Coleman had joined Tiger Management as a technology analyst straight out of Williams College in 1997. He founded Tiger Global in 2001 and built it into a hybrid the industry hadn't quite seen before: a fund equally comfortable buying public stocks and writing private venture checks, moving unusually fast into deals other investors took months to close. His early, high-conviction stake in Facebook - sold for an estimated $1 billion in 2013 - remains one of the defining bets of his career.
