He studied at the Central Conservatory of Music and then taught at Peking University, where he met Victor Wang and Minhong Yu, with whom he co-founded New Oriental Education & Technology Group. After New Oriental listed in New York, he began backing former students, and in 2011 he co-founded the Beijing seed fund ZhenFund with Victor Wang and Anna Fang. Forbes has credited him with bets on Meicai, Zhaogang, 17zuoye and Yitu, and Chinese business press reported in 2023 that he had stepped back from day-to-day leadership in favour of Anna Fang.
