Adam Sharkawy is Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Material Impact, a venture capital firm established in 2016 that builds and invests in companies powered by material science innovation. He previously served as Senior Vice President at The Medicines Company, leading its Surgery and Perioperative Care global business unit, held an executive leadership role in Smith & Nephew's emerging markets division, and was Vice President of Research and Advanced Development and New Ventures at Abbott Vascular, where he helped launch the Xience drug eluting stent and co-led the Guidant integration. Earlier he co-founded the medical device company Ventrica, which was acquired by Medtronic. He holds a PhD in biomedical engineering from Duke University and mechanical engineering degrees from the American University in Cairo and Texas A&M University.
