TLcom Capital was founded in 1999 by Maurizio Caio, a former Bain & Company and McKinsey consultant who spent 15 years advising telecom and technology executives before deciding entrepreneurs building African technology companies deserved the same caliber of strategic support. That conviction became concrete with the 2017 launch of the TIDE Africa Fund, and TLcom has since become one of the longest-running and most active Africa-focused technology investors, providing $500,000 to $15 million checks across fintech, agritech, edtech, mobility, and healthcare. The firm counts Andela, Twiga Foods, Pula, uLesson, and Kobo360 among its portfolio, backed by institutional investors including the European Investment Bank and IFC, and expanded its geographic mandate into North Africa in 2022.
No confirmed public exit yet - Andela, backed three years before reaching a $1.5 billion valuation in 2021, remains TLcom's clearest proof point as one of Africa's few non-fintech unicorns, though it stays privately held
