Gradient Ventures

Gradient Ventures was founded in 2017 by Anna Patterson, a search engine founder and former VP of Engineering for Google Search Quality, as Google's dedicated early-stage AI-focused venture fund. Staffed primarily by ex-Google technical leaders rather than traditional finance-background investors, the fund gives portfolio companies genuinely hands-on support on AI model architecture, data pipelines, and access to Google's internal technical resources, backing AI-first startups often before they've reached product-market fit. In October 2025, Gradient reached a pivotal inflection point, spinning out from Google entirely to operate as an independent investment firm - a structural shift reflecting how competitive and fast-moving the AI venture landscape has become. The fund has backed more than 175 companies including unicorns WRITER and Lambda AI, with more than $1 billion in assets under management.
