Biography

James Tan co-founded 55tuan, a NASDAQ-listed group-buying platform, before turning to venture capital and co-founding Quest Ventures in 2011 with fellow 55tuan co-founder Wang Yunming, initially based in Beijing before expanding across Southeast Asia. Tan personally led Quest's early Series A investment in Carousell, a Craigslist-style marketplace, helping scale it from a seed-stage app to a unicorn valuation, and has been described by Vulcan Post as an investor with the 'Midas touch' for his track record spotting regional marketplace winners. Under his leadership, Quest has become one of Southeast Asia's most active early-stage investors, with a portfolio spanning Carousell, ShopBack, and 99.co, positioning itself as the first institutional investor in many of the region's category-defining digital commerce platforms.
