Eric Acher co-founded monashees in 2005 during what he calls Brazil's 'tech winter' - a period when essentially no local early-stage venture capital industry existed - after cutting his teeth in strategy consulting at McKinsey and growth investing at General Atlantic across the US and Latin America. He started with just a $12 million fund and no real playbook to follow, building both monashees and much of the broader Latin American VC ecosystem from scratch alongside a handful of other early players. Two decades later, the firm has raised 10 funds totaling $1.5 billion, backed 125 companies including nine unicorns - Rappi, 99, Loggi, MadeiraMadeira, and Loft among them - and Acher has become one of the most recognized voices in Latin American venture capital, frequently drawing comparisons between the region's tech ecosystem and Southeast Asia's.
