Biography

Alex Clavel's role has been to impose process and portfolio discipline on a franchise once defined almost entirely by Masayoshi Son's personal appetite for scale. After a Princeton degree in East Asian Studies and nearly 20 years in investment banking at Morgan Stanley across New York, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Tokyo, he joined SoftBank in 2015 and later served as CEO of SoftBank Group International before taking the helm of the Vision Funds. His 2025 annual-report message is especially telling: it frames SoftBank less as a vision-only investor and more as a large, cycle-aware asset manager for AI-era category leaders, citing DoorDash's $71.2 billion IPO and $7.3 billion realized gain as proof of that discipline paying off.
