ARCH Venture Partners was founded in 1986 by Steven Lazarus, Clinton Bybee, Keith Crandell, and Robert Nelsen, originating from a collaboration between the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory built specifically to commercialize academic research. Nearly 40 years later, that model hasn't changed: ARCH still co-founds companies directly alongside scientists and researchers rather than simply writing checks into existing startups, concentrating almost entirely on early-stage life sciences, physical sciences, and increasingly AI-driven biology. That founder-embedded approach has produced more than 50 companies that reached billion-dollar valuations, including Illumina, Beam Therapeutics, and Karuna Therapeutics, and the firm closed its thirteenth flagship fund at more than $3 billion in September 2024, pushing total assets under management to roughly $12 billion.
