Background

Ryo Ishizuka moved to Boston at the age of 14 and graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a major in political economy. In 2006 he co-founded the social game developer RockYou in Silicon Valley, where he served as chief architect and as COO of RockYou Asia. He co-founded Mercari in Japan in 2013, launched Mercari USA the following year and became its CEO, contributing to the company's launch and growth in both Japan and the United States until he left in early 2019. Since leaving Mercari he has worked as an angel investor, and company announcements describe him as active in Seattle as an individual investor, startup mentor and NPO representative. In a 2025 interview page he is introduced as a former Mercari co-founder and angel investor, and says he invests in and advises startups from Seattle and mentors at accelerators.
