Angel investor, author and board member
Esther Dyson is an angel investor and author who bought the technology newsletter business from her employer Ben Rosen in 1983, renaming it EDventure Holdings and the newsletter Release 1.0, and edited it until 2006. She was the founding chairman of ICANN from 1998 to 2000, sold EDventure Holdings to CNET Networks in 2004, and trained as a backup cosmonaut at Star City outside Moscow between October 2008 and March 2009. In 2013 she founded Wellville, a 10-year nonprofit project working with five US communities on equitable wellbeing, which ran to 2024. Her own site describes her as an investor, journalist, author, commentator and philanthropist, and as a board member and angel investor in start-ups mostly in online services, health care and medicine, logistics, artificial intelligence, emerging markets and space travel. She chairs Avanlee Care and The Commons Project, sits on the boards of Charity Navigator, ExpandED Schools and the IT History Society, and is writing a second book, 'Term Limits', for MIT Press.
